Day of the Dead is a cultural tradition celebrated in Mexico and throughout Latin America in which people remember loved ones who have passed in a celebration of life.  Enjoy an evening of folkloric dances\, sweet treats\, art activities\, and more. \nGuests are invited to participate in a community ofrenda by sharing images or objects of loved ones and places\, constructed by master altarista Ofelia Esparza\, and her daughter\, artist Rosanna Esparza Ahrens. Guests can also see the altar built in honor of the rich cultures that make up Los Angeles titled El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora la Reina de Los Ángeles\, in the Becoming Los Angeles exhibition.  This family friendly celebration will take place from 5-9pm on November 2 and is free of charge with pre-registration. Walk ups welcome\, pre-registration is encouraged.

Famous the world over\, “The Avenue\,” as it was lovingly called\, was a must-visit destination for jazz lovers in Los Angeles. Join us for a series of conversations about Central Avenue and its history and eventual decline. The first program focuses on the beginnings of Central Avenue as a downtown gathering place for Los Angeles’s black residents. Sessions two and three look at the jazz scene and how Central Avenue was pivotal to the Civil Rights Movement.
