DESCRIPTION:Councilman Curren Price Hosts One of SoCal’s\nHottest and Longest Fireworks Display\nFourth of July celebration in Expo Park. features live musical entertainment\, family-friendly activities\, array of foods and All-American fireworks show \nIn celebration of Independence Day\, Los Angeles City Councilman Curren Price will host a FREE\, all-day family festival\, culminating with a 20-minute fireworks show in Expo Park. The picnic-style event\, which gets underway at 11 a. m. on the South Lawn\, features games and activities for the entire family\, such as face painting\, a rock climbing wall and inflatable jumpers. The holiday celebration will include contests and prizes for attendees\, as well as a wide variety of culinary specialties and plenty of tasty treats available for purchase. \nEntertainment begins at noon with live performances kicking off at 2 p.m. with the sounds from one of Southern California’s most talented R&B singer-songwriters Candice Boyd. finalist from reality television competition “The Four: Battle for Stardom;• Selenamos the hottest Selena Quintanilla Tribute Band in Los Angeles; and West Coast Hip Hop Pioneer Rodney O\, plus other special quests! \nThe Fourth of July community festival in the NEW 9″” concludes with one of the most impressive and patriotic fireworks display in front of the Natural History Museum around 9 p.m. Each year the event draws tens of thousands of people. SUMMARY:Are Americans Turning Against Science? A Zócalo/Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County Event
DESCRIPTION:Scientists have demonstrated that climate change is real\, but polls show that 30 percent of Americans disagree. Scientists have shown that genetically modified foods pose no threat\, but\, according to one survey\, half the country sees such foods as dangerous. And despite scientific assurances about vaccine safety\, the number of very young children who don’t get vaccinated has quadrupled in the past two decades. Why are so many Americans ignoring—or rejecting—broad scientific consensus on these and other questions? Can skepticism about scientists be blamed entirely on the internet\, the media\, or ideological polarization among both conservatives and liberals—or do scientific institutions themselves bear some responsibility? And what are the broader consequences of this decline in belief in science as our society becomes ever more dependent on technology and discovery? Caltech historian of science and co-author of Merchants of Doubt Erik Conway\, UCLA sociologist Jeffrey Guhin\, and Cary Funk\, director of science and society research at Pew Research Center\, visit Zócalo to explore Americans’ changing attitudes towards science.
